03. Integrated Project Planning

At a glance

  • Module: 03 of 13 · Part I — Foundations
  • Sessions: S7 (Week 4)
  • Level: Beginner to Intermediate
  • Estimated time: ~6 hours
  • Prerequisites: Modules 01–02

Overview

A project plan is not a single document — it is a set of interrelated decisions that must agree with one another. Change the schedule and you change the cost; change the scope and you change the risk. This module shows how the pieces fit together as an integrated plan, and how a project keeps that plan under control once work starts.

It also introduces the central strategic choice of the course: predictive versus adaptive planning, and what each assumes about how well you can know the future.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this module you should be able to:

  1. Describe the components of an integrated project management plan and how they interlock.
  2. Explain the role of baselines and what changing one means.
  3. Compare predictive and adaptive planning approaches on the dimensions where they differ.
  4. Set up a lightweight change control process suited to a project's size.
  5. Identify the trade-offs between scope, schedule, cost, and quality when one of them moves.

01 Integrated Project Planning S7 Available

This is a single integrative session: the module's outcomes on baselines, predictive versus adaptive planning, and the constraints trade-off are all developed inside Lesson 1, and change control is dealt with in depth in Module 11 Lesson 3.

Lab

Planning is practiced across several labs rather than one. The two that most directly exercise this module are:

Use the Work Breakdown Structure template and Communications Plan template as you build the integrated plan they depend on.

Case study

See the Case Studies overview for a scenario on replanning after a major change.

Self-assessment

Quizzes for this module are planned. See the Self-Assessment overview.
